Selected as a result of a competition a few months before independence in 1964, the anthem resembles the musical style of southern African songs, like others in the "Eastern folk" style of anthem. Eastern Folk: Anthems that are reminiscent of the "national style" of music, often adapted from folk music, and sometimes utilize native instruments. Examples include Japan, India, Kenya, Swaziland, and Senegal. Despite having done this patriotic act, he died penniless.
