Jonas Kaufmann is considered the German response to Italian supremacy on the tenor sector. But the final decision to take up the profession of singer then seems not to have been so simple. Jonas sang in the school choir and joined the additional choir of the Theatre on the Gartnerplatz as a senior schoolboy. But he initially studied not singing, but, on his father's advice, mathematics. What he writes about his early singing days on his home page is moving. Some evenings, I was hardly sure of being able to get the performance over and done with decently, and I felt opera houses like La Scala or the MET to be as far away as the moon ...'. It is an almost unbelievable statement by an opera superstar today, in whom the voice, the personality and the appearance supplement one another in almost ideal manner. In 1998/99, he produced those early recordings of Marschner's Vampyr and Abert's Ekkehard, from which important excerpts can be heard on this CD. With the status of an opera superstar, Jonas Kaufmann is considered the most important German tenor since Fritz Wunderlich.
