He took piano lessons as a child in Tabriz and went on to study composition and conducting in Hamburg, Germany before returning to Teheran in 1952. "Parvaneh" means 'butterfly' in Persian and "Tchahargah" refers to the mode (or 'dastgah' in Persian classical music) that it is composed in - (F#, G, A#, B, C#, D, E#, F#). 11 pp. The audio clip is an excerpt from the opening.
