Epitaph for PJ was written in 2000. It is a tribute to Philip Jones who died earlier that year. Philip, perhaps more than any other musician raised the status of the playing of brass instruments to a new and elevated level. He commissioned countless pieces for his ensemble and created a new and exciting repertoire of works that will enrich the lives of players and audiences for many generations to come. This short piece is tranquil and ecstatic in mood and was given its first performance at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester by members of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and students of the college conducted by James Gourlay.
