John Marsh: Eighteen Voluntaries for the Organ, Chiefly intended for the use of Young Practitioners, London 1791. Marsh was a prolific amateur composer, devoted to music, and directed concerts in Canterbury and Chichester. Useful and not too difficult, these voluntaries were intended to raise the bar of quality for the then low quality of church and cathedral music. This collection includes a very wonderful introduction, converted from the authors origional, intended to introduce the young organist to stops, combinations of stops, and how they relate to different types of services. It is an excellent guide for the modern organist who wishes to understand practices of the late eighteenth century. 49 page spiral bound score with 9 pages of introduction and methodology.
