Handel composed this work for Alexander's Feast, written in celebration of the day honoring St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music. Following the choral introduction in 4/4, it moves to a lilting 6/8 to introduce the main melodic section. This arrangement was specifically designed for the developing choir, and it is an excellent tool for teaching phrasing and stylistic features of the Baroque era.
