Inspired (in part) by Louis Andriessen's use of instrumentation in 'Melodie', 'Whimsy' is all about rhythmic counterpoint, simple, complimentary, Gamelan-inspired modes and the melding of two, very different, timbres. Post-minimalist in nature, it is challenging but not virtuosic, edgy, but not overly-dissonant. Although written for descant (soprano) recorder and piano, this piece can also be played with treble (alto) and tenor recorder.
