Purinton in 1877, twelve years after West Virginia became a state. Purinton later became President of the West Virginia University (WVU). West Virginia Hills was first publicly performed by WVU seniors. Later, a similar song, The West Virginia Hills, was composed by H.E. Engle and Ellen King, and published in 1886.
