Träumerei ("Dreaming") is one of the pieces of the Kinderszenen ("Scenes from Childhood"), Op. 15, a set of thirteen pieces of music for piano composed by Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856), in 1838. Träumerei is one of Schumann's best known pieces; it is the opening and closing musical theme of the 1947 Hollywood film Song of Love, and Träumerei is the title of a 1944 German biographical film on Schumann.
"As far as the Scenes from Childhood are concerned, I owe them one of the liveliest pleasures of my life." These words were uttered by none other than Franz Liszt. In the evenings he often enjoyed playing part of them, not only for his little daughter Blandine-Rachel but also for his own pleasure. Even today, the "Scenes from Childhood" still raise the question as to whether they were written for children or adults. Schumann himself described them as being the reminiscences of an older person for older people, but did not deny that "several children’s heads were in his mind when composing them".
This is arrangement was made for string quartet. The score keep the original metronome mark, but it is common for musicians to choose to play this piece more slowly. This arrangement has already been used in weddings and is a good option for professional string quartets as well as chamber music concerts.
