In this piece all of the instruments have solos, and the Viola is featured. The Viola part is quite challenging. Using Polytonal harmony, different melodic passages are passed through the instruments while the other three players provide constantly changing accompaniments. There are frequent meter changes and it is not really written as an introduction to that concept; hence the designation that it is for more advanced players. Techniques such as pizzicato and artifical harmonics are used, but sparingly for contrast. This is more of a recital piece, not really a background or "reception" piece.
