The three songs need not necessarily be performed together. "Love is and was my Lord and King" is a delightful miniature in neo-baroque style. It is relatively straightforward as long as the singers can keep up with the modulations. "Crossing the bar" is quiet and meditative, again relatively straightforward although it requires (ideally) basses able to sing down to a low D-flat. "Of old sat Freedom on the heights" is by far the most demanding of the three but also the most exhilarating if performed well, with a piano part that is cheerfully out of sync with the choir for much of the time.
