Theme and Variations on an Irish Melody for flute and horn opens in A major. The principal melodic material is stated by the flute and then is followed in the horn. This material continues throughout the first and second variations. The third variation, in A minor, has solo lines for both instruments. The fourth variation returns to A major at a faster tempo. The theme returns in the Finale to a soft ending.
