The Benedictus (Canticle of Zechariah) is the premier gospel canticle for morning prayer. Its use at morning prayer, combined with being Zechariah’s song of thanksgiving at the birth of his son, John the Baptist, makes it especially appropriate for the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist and throughout the season of Advent. The images of justice, joy and peace in this hymn of praise make it suitable as a gathering or sending song for eucharistic celebrations throughout the liturgical year. —Tony Alonso.
