Twenty-five settings from Michael Praetorius' Musae Sioniae and edited by Carl F. Schalk, these are simple four-part settings in cantional style. Cantional style settings were characterized by the melody appearing in the upper part (in contrast to the earlier practice of placing it in the tenor), the accompanying voices proceeding in simple note-against-note, homorhythmic fashion. These simple settings may well serve to introduce his music to an ever-increasing circle of those who find his music particularly suited to the needs and requirements of today's church choirs.
