Major Graham Seton-Hutchinson of the British Army Machine Gun Corps, 33rd Division, is known to be “The Mad Major.” A true military tactician, Seton-Hutchinson’s exploits during World War I earned him the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross. Alford’s march is a tribute to Seton-Hutchinson’s actions. “The Mad Major” takes a unique musical form with bouncy melodies, singing lyrical lines, and just a little bit of the classic pomp British marches are known for.
