Little Drummer Boy for Multi Level Piano Ensemble Arranged by Susan Staples Bell What better time than Christmas, to come together to share some fun ensemble playing with your students? Playing the piano is often a solitary pursuit, but recently, Class Piano, or Group Piano lessons have become more popular. This piece is inspired by these new teaching opportunities and teachers who are eager to incorporate percussion parts into their piano performance. This arrangement of Little Drummer Boy has fun for Elementary, Late Elementary, Primo & Secondo, who all share the melody, while the Terzo is the foundation. Written in the Key of C Major, BPM 106. Don’t miss the Ravel like harmonies in the 2nd & 3rd verse of the melody. But rhythm is paramount in this arrangement: Eighth note patterns are equally traded among all the groups to foster a “regal” feeling as the little drummer boy joyfully performs for the Christ child. A fun addition: Percussion parts! The piece begins and ends with each Piano part “drumming”: There’s cymbal like sounds and snap their fingers, and then students slaps their hands on their thighs and hand clap, and even foot stomps. The thigh slaps and hand claps could become an audience participation throughout the entire song…. Also, optional suggested cut, if you feel like the piece is too long.
