Poetry has often inspired composers to create orchestral masterpieces, some of which have garnered much more attention than the original text. For example, Goethe's The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Mallarme's The Afternoon of a Faun were the literary sources for Dukas' and Debussy's very well-loved symphonic poems (1897 and 1894 respectively). Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending (1914), a romance for violin and piano, is better known in a later revised version from 1921 as an idyllic work for orchestra with violin soloist. In this form, it has far eclipsed Meredith's original poem to become one of the most beloved pieces of classical music in the repertoire. It has been arranged for solo flute with flute choir by Darleen Mitchell.
