The Idol of the Flies ist eine Horrorgeschichte von Jane Rice. Sie handelt von einem Waisenjungen, der seine Umwelt tyrannisiert und als Symbol seiner Macht immer wieder einen "Abgott der Fliegen“anruft. Damit ruft er tatsächlich den Teufel, dessen Name Beelzebub übersetzt "Der Abgott der Fliegen“ ist. Cesarinis Tongedicht erzählt weniger die genaue Handlung der schaurigen Geschichte nach, sondern reproduziert vielmehr dessen dichte, düstere Atmosphäre. Absolut packend!

Le roman The Idol of the Flies (L’Idole des Mouches) de Jane Rice (1913-2005) est un classique de la littérature d’horreur. L’auteur raconte l’histoire d’un enfant qui se livre des actes de cruauté pour tyranniser son entourage. Pour obtenir le soutien des démons, l’enfant répondant au prénom de Pruitt, invoque rituellement le nom d’une idole ayant l’apparence d’une mouche. L’idole finit par se manifester. Il s’agit de Belzébuth (Béelzébub), le prince des démons.Pour comprendre le lien entre le titre du roman et le nom Belzébuth, une petite explication s’impose. Baal Zebul (Baal le prince) était une divinité philistine honorée dans la ville d’Eqrôn. En changeantla dernière lettre du mot, les Juifs lui donnèrent le sobriquet de Baal Zebub signifiant « L’Idole ou le Seigneur des Mouches ».
