♫ This combination of tune and lyrics first appeared in Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern,1833, attributed to William Sandys
♫ I was taught in high school French class that “noel” is the French term for Christmas. Etymologists trace the term back to Latin “natalis” which means birthday. If so, the meaning in this carol is “the first ‘happy birthday’ spoken by angels was to the shepherds of Bethlehem.”
