It's a sweet, and brief sentiment expressed with Waits' incisive lyrics and wonderful sense of melody, but as a brief sequence in the film, it just doesn't make much of a song to perform. This arrangement extends the song by starting with a verse set for a male voice, followed by a verse set for a female, whereupon both join over an active background to sing a duet for the final chorus and conclusion.
Having the male and female soloist opens some dramatic possibilities your audiences will enjoy. It can be sung as a love duet, or it the two may not interact at all, but simply make the same statement from two different perspectives. It's interesting to think about what impact this beautiful song can have when you need a song to slow things down.
Orchestration for the active ensemble is TTBB. The song touches on the universal theme of disappointing one's partner and asking for forgiveness. It's low-key, mellow, bittersweet and romantic.
