By Bobby Hebb. By Bobby Hebb. Arranged by Stewart J Wallace. Disco,Jazz,Latin,Pop,Soul. 17 pages. Stewart J Wallace #977567. Published by Stewart J Wallace (A0.1394109)."Sunny" was written in 1963 and released as a single by the composer Bobby Hebb in 1966 rising to number 2 on the US Pop chart. Thanks to its success Bobby Hebb toured with The Beatles in the same year, and other performers who have recorded the song include Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Cher and Boney M.
It is an optimistic and upbeat song, but when Hebb's older brother was stabbed outside a Nashville nightclub this event inspired him to write the song. He once said about the song, "All my intentions were to think of happier times and pay tribute to my brother – basically looking for a brighter day – because times were at a low. "
This arrangement has a slight "latin" groove to the piano accompaniment, and the vocals should be sung with a direct, clipped and rhythmic delivery. Clarity of the words is very important, and even though the song is in a minor key, the performance needs to be uplifting, hopeful and encouraging. Watch out for the key shifts!
