SKU: A0.928329

Composed by Dorothy Heyward, Du Bose Heyward, George Gershwin, and Ira Gershwin. Arranged by Karen Peterson. Jazz. Score. 2 pages. Karen Peterson #5955419. Published by Karen Peterson (A0.928329).

George Gershwin’s 1935 tune from the still-controversial folk opera Porgy and Bess was inspired by African-American spirituals, blues, and Ukrainian lullabies. This amalgamation has spawned tens of thousands of recordings in all manner of styles.

My double-strung arrangement sings the jazzy melody over a simple accompaniment made bittersweet with accidentals set on the left side.

Range: 20x2 – 21x2 strings. G below middle C through F. (The highest F is in one chord in m8 and can easily be left out if your harp doesn’t go that high; this is what I do on my harp on YouTube in the "Look Inside" preview.)

Key: C minor (three flats).

Lever changes: LH optional change to Bb. Set A natural and B natural on the left before playing.

Level: Advanced intermediate because of one note in m29, which can easily be eliminated, thus making the tune intermediate.

Good for: Performance, therapeutic settings.

Double-strung effects: Echoed rhythms using the same notes on both sides. Preset accidentals on the left allow for jazzy chords without lever flips, then one lever flip at the end allows for easier hand placements for complicated runs. Paired, overlapping hand positions create an easier way to play a complicated rhythm.

Characteristics: Syncopated melody line over half notes. All chords are in the accompaniment. Most chords are two notes; there are some three- and four-note chords. Several chords are sixths or sevenths; some are inversions. Neither hand needs to place more than an octave spread between finger 1 and finger 4. There are only two sixteenth notes. There are no cross-overs/unders.

Finger placement: Finger number suggestions are provided for key phrases with bolded L/R for levered accidentals. Numbers above the notes are suggestions for the RH (marked with "R" or "R#" when they occur in the bottom staff). Numbers below the notes are suggestions for the LH (marked with "L" or "L#" when they occur in the top staff). To see what I mean, view the PDF of finger placement examples in "Summertime:" www.EnjoyTheHarp.com/s/summertime-notes-enjoy-the-harp.pdf

Notation: Chord symbols and lyrics are provided. Treble clef is used for both staves.

Length: 2 pages. 44 measures. 2:15 minutes.

Page turns: None if you print.
