There have been more than 400 recorded versions of the song, performed by many relevant artists such as John Lennon.

King's record was number one on the R&B charts and was a top ten hit on the US charts twice - on its original release, and on the Billboard chart on May 13, 1961 and peaking at number four on May 16. June 1961.

It also reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in 1987 following its re-release, mainly because of Jeans, originally reaching number 27 on its first release.

The song continued to receive awards in the following years.
