'Stand By Me' is a must for any modern bass players repertoire. Whether you are in soul band, function band or just love a good hooky bass line, then this song is worth the time spent to learn it. The original track sees Lloyd Trotman on double bass, so take some time to dial in a tone with a controlled low end and a bump in the upper mids. If you have a bass with flat-wound strings then grab it for this one.

The song employs the simple repeated chord progression of A, F#m, D, E and A (I, vi, IV, V & I). This chord progression is also for the basis for a large number of other pop songs, both old and new. As a result the ideas in this track can also be employed with a range of other songs to give them a retro feel.

This song provides a great introduction to walking bass, focusing on the root of each with simple diatonic walks between chords. During the a chord the walking uses an E and G# to create a V to I perfect cadence which heavily enforces the key. During the F#m the use of an E under the chord creates a tension that isn't initially resolved until the second bar. For the D and E chords the use of simple root and major third chord tones outline the harmony and set up the perfect cadence. The whole line is rather elegant in it's simplicity.

Note the difference in rhythm of the intro and first verse compared to the rest of the song. These tied notes on the '&' of two only appear in these earlier sections. Once the arrangement fills out with other instrumentalists the rhythms become more consistent. This is a common mistake in other transcriptions (and the reason I decided to tackle it). Some of the notes are staccato and these should remain unaccented.

It is a real joy to play and a real crowd pleaser. If you have any questions feel free to drop me a message on my website www.antonycull.co.uk.
