Composed by Noah Keesecker. Score only. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.05201).

The piece is jazz related in its occasional use of extended harmonies, melodic writing and stylistic approach. The frequent meter changes and rhythmic intensity coupled with the constant passing off of melodic lines drive the piece forward while always maintaining a certain amount of spontaneity characteristic of a cat in motion.

The Spontaneous Cat is a short abstract work that utilizes the varied colors of the percussion ensemble to describe the many mysterious facets of the cat. It is based on three musical ideas, all of which are found within the first ten measures of the piece. Within the work these ideas are transformed into many different characters by means of colour, contour, and techniques of variation to illuminate a characteristic of the ever mystical cat. Structurally, this work does not follow any formal guidelines. It should be conceived more as a set of motions that intertwine and meld together to create one homogenous and colorful movement in sound.
