The present CD offers a variety of solo songs based on texts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) composed by women of his day. Goethe's poems, more than those of any other German poet, have inspired composers to produce musical settings. Yet song settings by women composers have remained largely overlooked, and many of the works appear here in a modern edition for the first time. The two-volume collection of Goethe songs by Max Friedlaender (Weimar: Goethe-Gesellschaft, 1896 and 1916) includes songs by three women composers, but two more recent anthologies contain exclusively works by men. The Lied, a small musico-literary form, was considered an appropriate genre for women composers. Since many women set poems of Goethe to music, there is a substantial body of songs from which to choose. In 1999 commemorating the 250th anniversary of Goethe's birth, it is fitting to dedicate a volume to Goethe songs by women composers.
