Mateo Soler was born in Martorell (Barcelona), in 1729 and died on August 15, 1799. He was a
bassoonist of the Royal Chapel in Madrid from 1780 to 1799 and brother of the famous
composer Padre Antonio Soler. Previously he was a bassoonist for the Reales Guardias
Walonas and Descalzas Reales.
The Sonata para fagot is a work composed for the bassoon opposition to the Royal Chapel of
1784. On the cover is "Sonata de Fagotto/ Pieza de Esamen/Compuesta Por Dn. Matheo
Soler"
The original manuscript is composed to be performed with the accompaniment of
unencrypted continuous bass. The author has chosen the option of making a harmonized
accompaniment to facilitate its interpretation and dissemination. In this way, it can be played
as a duet (with bassoon or cello accompaniment) or as a sonata (with piano or harpsichord
accompaniment).
It presents a moderate technical difficulty, and shows a musical and aesthetic interest similar
to the European of its time.
