Each of the 3 movements has a distinct character. The first features both legato phrases and staccato punctuations. The second focuses on the instrumental and rhythmic color possibilities of the same E pitch spread out over five octaves. The varied colors of the different piano registers are highlighted in the last movement. It would be interesting to perform this piece on historical pianos or keyboards. There is no use of the pedal. These Silent Duration pieces are notable for their incorporation of silence as an integral part of the compositional fabric. The duration is 11'08. There is also a version of this piece (Silent Durations XVI) for instrumental ensemble.
