Published by Gabe StClair (A0.1127499).A short woodwind quartet for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Inspired by an excerpt from "More Stanzas Applied to Spiritual Things" by St John of the Cross, 16th century Spanish mystic. "I went out seeking love, And with unfaltering hope I flew so high, so high, That I overtook the prey." Structure based on a small portion of Missa Te Deum Laudamus by Krzysztof Borek. Melody based on Gregorian chant. I imagined the Saint dreaming of turning into an eagle. In my imagination, he desires only the Love of God, as a hungry bird is focused on the hunt. The raptor pursues another bird until it plucks the prey in mid-air, almost as a surprise. She brings the food back to her nest to feed her hungry chicks, then returns to the hunt to also feed herself. I find this to be an interesting way to view the continuing pursuit of God's Love. ~gs.
