Composed by Heather Cattanach. 20th Century,Blues,Children,Instructional,Jazz. Score. 3 pages. Published by Heather Cattanach (A0.507450).

The constellation Sculptor represents the sculptor’s studio with a table, mallet and two chisels lying beside a carved head. It is one of the fourteen southern constellations named by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. It contains some interesting deep sky objects such as the Sculptor Galaxy which was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783, who had a career first as a soprano and then as an astronomer. She was the first professional female astronomer, and (along with her brother William) discovered several comets and nebulae. They were working together when he discovered the planet Uranus. Like the other Lacaille constellation pieces, this one uses a twentieth century musical style. This Intermediate Piano Solo is based on a blues chord progression and uses the blues scale. In the improvisation section in the middle feel free to use some or all of the notes of the blues scale for your melody line, and if you like you can add texture to the left hand chords by comping on rhythmic patterns. Please choose your own dynamics. From “88 Constellations” a collection by Heather Cattanach featuring one piece of piano music for each of the 88 constellations (to match the number of keys on a standard piano). Performance Time 1 minute 15 seconds. 2 pages. (General Instructional, Modern, 20th Century, Repertoire, Recital, Improvisation, Blues).
