From somewhere in the mountains, streams converge gradually into a river. On its journey to the Chesapeake Bay, the Rappahannock passes through an area equidistant from Washington, D.C. and Richmond. The tranquility and quiet power of this river was once interrupted by opposing armies in monumental struggles of ideals and passions. Conflicts eventually end, resolved or not. People, places, even the river heal and renew. But only the river is timeless. - D.J.L.
