Composed by William Walton. Ceremonial fanfare. Light Concert. Score and parts. With Standard Notation. Duration 0:35. Winwood Music #0304. Published by Winwood Music (WO.0304).Sir Robert Mayer, CH (1879–1985), was a businessman, philanthropist, and patron of music, who in 1923 founded the highly successful Robert Mayer concerts for children. In 1954 he extended his patronage by creating Youth and Music. It was this organisation, through its joint chairman Lord Drogheda, that commissioned a fanfare from Walton to open a concert on 5 June 1979 at the Royal Festival Hall, celebrating Sir Robert’s centenary. The queen, who had attended his concerts for children when young, was present. Walton planned his fanfare as a short introduction to the orchestral national anthem and, with unlimited youthful forces at his disposal, scored it for 12 trumpets. The Salute was originated by OUP and read in proof by Walton, but has never been published until now.
