A Romance is a musical form common throughout the classical and romantic periods composed to emulate a particularly tender emotion. This composition uses a delicate motive that begins with two exposed pitches. The initially feeble melody expands beyond tenderness and explores stronger themes. The piece which begins in Ab Major and modulates to Bb Major near the end, features mixed meter, offset beat patterns, double stop harmonies, and upper positions in the viola part. It is an excellent expressive addition to the repertoire of both the advanced high school violist and the professional violist. Romance is approximately 5 minutes in length.
