Commissioned in 1990 by the Kennebec Valley Music Educators Association in Augusta Maine, this ABA piece was written to depict the conviction of those seeking freedom and democracy around the world. The introduction and opening section is in traditional melodic and harmonic vocabulary, while the second section is written without a key center. It constantly wanders through many different tonalities while retaining a lyrical and expressive nature.
