"Purple Rain" is a song from the 1984 film of the same name (starring Prince in his first film role), which won an Academy Award and is widely considered one of the greatest musical films ever made.
The soundtrack album (which also featured the #1 singles "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy") sold over 25 million copies and was ranked #8 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, while the song itself was ranked #18 on the list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
"Purple Rain" became Prince's signature song, and it would be the last song he performed live before his death in 2016.
