At one point, he and his servant are about to give up the struggle against the cold weather, but continue the trek step by step, through the deep winter snow. This piece is a setting of that journey which takes the melody of the popular Christmas carol GOOD KING WENCESLAS and transforms it. It is for full orchestra featuring pizzicato strings and wintery percussion.
