The Six Partitas, BWV 825-830, are among the most important and technically demanding keyboard works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Partitas were the last keyboard suites Bach composed, written between 1725 and 1730. They are the most free-ranging and structurally diverse of Bach's keyboard suites, with each Partita featuring a unique opening movement rather than a strict prelude. The six Partitas were published individually as part of Bach's "Clavier-Übung" (Keyboard Practice) collection before being compiled into a single volume in 1731. Bach initially planned seven Partitas, but the final collection contained six. The Partitas display a carefully structured sequence of critical relationships, moving up and down by increasing intervals (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th) and ending with Bach's name's first and last letters (B-flat to B-natural). The Partitas are considered among Bach's greatest and most inspired keyboard works, showcasing his mastery of counterpoint and the expressive range of the harpsichord. Each Partita has a distinct character, from the "poetic and pastoral" to the "epic and tragic."Performing the Partitas is a significant technical and interpretive challenge for pianists and harpsichordists. Many renowned artists have recorded them, including Glenn Gould, Rosalyn Tureck, and Jory Vinikour.
