Ernani (1844), Giuseppe Verdi’s fifth opera, is based on the homonymous tragedy by Victor Hugo. Verdi’s success with Ernani, as well as Nabucco and I lombardi alla prima crociata, can be ascribed to two distinct ideas: the melodic idea and the patriotic idea. The melodic idea is very important to move and touch the audience, while the patriotic idea is the source of enthusiasm and emotions. Approximately ten years elapse between two similar stories: the one of the outlaw Ernani and the one of Manrico, the troubadour. In the prelude to Act I, in only three minutes, Verdi has succeeded in skillfully concentrating the main elements of the entiredrama. One can clearly observe the themes of love, oath, and death.

Ernani (1844) ist Giuseppe Verdis fünfte Oper und basiert auf der gleichnamigen Tragödie von Victor Hugo. Ihr großer Erfolg lässt sich, ebenso wie derjenige von Nabucco und I lombardi alla prima crociata (Die Lombarden beim ersten Kreuzzug), auf zwei verschiedene Hintergründe zurückführen, den patriotischen und den melodischen. Der Aspekt der Melodie trägt entscheidend dazu bei, das Publikum anzurühren, während Gefühl und Begeisterung dem patriotischen Aspekt entspringen. Zwischen den ähnlich gelagerten Geschichten des Banditen Ernani und des Troubadours Manrico lagen annähernd zehn Jahre in Verdis Werdegang. Im Vorspiel zum ersten Akt von Ernani hat erin nur drei Minuten die wesentlichen Elemente des gesamten Dramas verdichtet: Klar sind darin die Themen der Liebe, des Schwurs und des Todes zu erkennen.

Le succès d’Ernani, comme celui de Nabucco et des Lombards la première croisade (I Lombardi alla prima crociata), repose sur deux éléments particuliers : l’idée mélodique et l’idée patriotique. Le choix de l’idée mélodique est d’une grande importance. Elle est le vecteur qui sert toucher et éveiller l’intérêt du public. L’idée patriotique nourrit l’enthousiasme et les émotions. Environ dix ans plus tard, Verdi reprendra une histoire similaire celle du personnage d’Ernani, un noble banni de la cour, travers le personnage de Manrique dans LeTrouvère. Dans le Prélude du premier acte de l’opéra Ernani, Verdi réussit, en trois minutes seulement, nous offrir un superbe condensé des éléments principaux qui jalonnent le drame. On distingue très clairement les thèmes de l’amour, de la promesse et de la mort.
