By Daniel Baldwin. Composer's Notes... Phantom Rapture was commissioned by, and is gratefully dedicated to, professional touring artist bass trombonist, Aaron Misenheimer, who is involved in a wonderful commissioning project to bring the bass trombone to new audiences by touring the country with a program that includes everything from classical to jazz to heavy metal bass trombone literature. It is this that attracted me to adding a piece to his cause. The literal definition of the word rapture is joy. With this in mind, I took a little different approach to writing this piece. As opposed to carefully developing sections, I purposely strung together a series of short underdeveloped sections that give the piece a sense of movement and anxiety. The piece alternates dark and dramatic sections with pretty lyrical sections that quickly shift gears. In the end, joy wins out, as is the way it should be.
