It is a lively and compelling march that has been continuously popular with Protestant congregations for 150 years. The Salvation Army adopted it as a favorite processional early in the 20th C. This hymn is often sung at military funerals including that of American president Eisenhower in1969. Apart from its obvious martial associations, the song has also been embraced by political causes such as the American civil rights movement.
