Composed by Lowell Mason, 1872. Arranged by John van Gulik. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 8 pages. John van Gulik #3519181. Published by John van Gulik (A0.827998).

Nearer my God to Thee is a TTBB Male Choir arrangement of the traditional tune by Lowell Mason with piano accompaniment.  The lyrics by Sarah F. Adams were loosely based on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob's dream. In 1912, survivors of the Titanic recounted that this is what the ship’s band played as they knew they were dying.  But when you sing the lyrics of the hymn, you’ll find that it’s not so much about dying, as it is about living and new life through the power of the cross.
