Published by Piper Publications (A0.811705).The string quartet is the second of three that Mozart wrote in 1790 for Friedrich Wilhelm II, King of Prussia, who was clearly a very good amateur cellist. There are four movements, Allegro, Larghetto, Minuetto and Allegro assai and the style and scale is very similar to that of the contemporary quartets by Joseph Haydn.
This arrangement is suitable for advanced players.
In arranging this for woodwind quartet, it has been necessary to re-distribute the parts to reflect the different characteristics of each of the wind instruments. For example, the interplay between the violins which are effectively interchangeable would not always work so well between the flute and oboe. The original makes extensive use of the high range of the cello which is frequently above the range of the bassoon and has sometimes been transposed down an octave or given to the clarinet. The phrasing has been adapted to be more suitable for the wind instruments and players should feel free to make further adaptations - particularly with the addition of slurs or staccato. I have been restrained in the addition of slurs as adding too many may have an adverse effect on breath control - a staccato passage uses less breath.
