As the title points out, my intention was to take advantage and to explore the numerous characteristics of the different instruments constituting the brass quintet, especially their wide dynamic resources, wherein a quiet "pastoral" atmosphere can quickly evolve into a strong "symphonic" outburst. The sound texture of these five instruments is exceptionally malleable while their potential for technical virtuosity has today reached a new peak.
I have chosen classical forms as far as the structure of the work is concerned: 3 movements, sonata, rondo, fugato, etc.
This work has been commissioned by the CDMC (Departmental Council for Music and Culture of High-Alsace, France) as the set piece to the 2005 International Philip Jones Competition for brass quintets in Guebwiller, France.
Moods is dedicated to those musicians who accept the musical and artistic challenges posed by the melodies, harmonies and rhythms of contemporary music.
Robert Gulya.
