Mantra was commissioned by Fanfare Concordia Middelstum on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. As in Spiriti, my composition for brass band, I used an existing quote as the basis for this work: namely, the Dutch melody of Psalm 150. This theme is repeated in fragments in the manner of a mantra. This protective mantra leads us through life’s perilous rocks and untamed waters, through tranquil islands of refuge and places of calm meditation, eventually leading to a full chorale that brings the composition to an elegant close.

Mantra werd geschreven in opdracht van Fanfare Concordia Middelstum ter gelegenheid van haar honderdjarig bestaan. Net als in Spiriti, mijn compositie voor brassband, heb ik als basis voor dit werk een bestaand thema gebruikt, namelijk de melodie van psalm 150. Dit motief wordt herhaald in fragmenten, op de wijze van een mantra. Deze beschermende mantra voert ons door de gevaarlijke rotsen en wilde wateren van het leven, door serene eilanden als toevluchtsoord en plaatsen van kalme meditatie, uitmondend in een vol klinkend koraal dat de compositie op een elegante manier afsluit.

Mantra wurde von der Fanfare Concordia Middelstum anlässlich ihres 100-jährigen Jubiläums in Auftrag gegeben. Wie schon in meinem Stück Spriti für Brass Band habe ich auch in dieser Komposition ein Originalzitat als Grundlage verwendet, nämlich die niederländische Melodie des 150. Psalms. Das Thema wird in Fragmenten wie ein Mantra wiederholt. Dieses schützende Mantra führt uns durch gefährliche Klippen und wilde Gewässer des Lebens, ruhige Inseln der Geborgenheit und meditative Plätze letztendlich in einen vollendeten Choral, der die Komposition würdevoll abschließt.

Mantra est une commande de la Fanfare Concordia Middelstum pour marquer son centenaire. Comme Spiriti, ma pièce pour brass band, cette œuvre est fondée sur un air ancien, la mélodie néerlandaise du Psaume 150. Des fragments de ce thème sont répétés la manière d’un mantra. Ce mantra protecteur nous conduit, dans cette musique comme dans la vie, travers des rochers hasardeux et des eaux tumultueuses, travers des îles tranquilles offrant protection et lieux de méditation, pour aboutir enfin un choral en tutti qui mène la pièce une élégante conclusion.
