Published by Marcelo Fortin (A0.1010593).The Little Suite Americana consists of four pieces based freely on Latin American rhythms. The first one is called "Joropo", like the Venezuelan dance, although the traditional music is a bit livelier than this version, meant to be heard rather than danced. The second piece has the serene rhythm of a Cuban "danzón". "El Paseo", The Journey, has the influence of the South American salon music of the XIX century and the "Samba Final" is a tribute to the famous Brazilian dance. This last piece is not necessarily programmatic but there is some sort of plot to it. It runs normally with its Carnival atmosphere until it arrives to the flute variations, in which the interpreter seems to get carried away and starts improvising rather chaotically. The timid try from the pianist in order to get the flutist back on track, remain fruitless, to the dismay of the ensemble, until the flute player seems to find the right path again and, after a final failed attempt, he or she resumes the frisky tune. This composition was dedicated to the British flautist Rachel Smith and the Hilser Trio. MARCELO FORTIN began his music studies in his native land, Chile, and then continued them in Europe. He obtained degrees in orchestra conducting and composition in Germany and The Netherlands, and has been working as a composer and arranger on and off for many decades, having composed music for television, films and theatre, and combining his activities with his work in the media.
