It was first publicized in the movie "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing" in 1955 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1956. The song has been recorded by various artists, with The Four Aces' version being the best-selling. It was also used as the theme song for the soap opera "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" from 1967 to 1973. The music was commissioned by 20th Century Fox for the movie, and it was included in the film's score that was composed and conducted by Alfred Newman. The first live performance and recording was by Don Cornell in July 1955.
