Amongst the musical material is a folk song from North-East Iceland. This symphony is in four connected movements which are all based on the same musical material.

Premiered in Reykjavik, Iceland, this work has also been heard at the Gulbenkian Festival in Portugal, as well as in Finland, Sweden and the Lincoln Centre, New York.
