Introduction and Allegro was written for the MIT Concert Band at the Massachusett Institute of Technology. Commissioned in July 1983 by conductor John Corley for the group’s 35th anniversary, the world premiere took place on December 3, 1983. Later, the MIT Concert Band took Lane’s Introduction and Allegro on tour in 1984 and 1988. On April 30, 2000 the MIT Concert Band featuring alumni members once again performed the piece. In the aggregate, this programmatic and atmospheric ten minute composition depicting the sunrise and sounds of the ocean in Wellfleet (MA, Cape Cod Bay), where Lane spent his summers composing, was programmed eleven times.
This excellent and very musical piece for advanced intermediate-level school-, university-, or community bands was published in 2017 by Editions BIM (score: ref. OV9b / set of parts: ref. ov9c).
Other concert band pieces by Lane: Scherzo, Suite for tenor saxophone and concert band, and Air Apparent for flute solo and concert band.
Demosthenes Dimitrakoulakos, April 2017.
