Martino built on Montgomery's style as a young guitarist and returned to Montgomery's records to relearn the guitar after having an operation to prevent a brain aneurism in 1980. With a nod to symmetry, Martino decided to record a second tribute to Montgomery, the first being The Visit (Cobblestone), later rereleased as Footprints (Muse). On tribute No. 2, Martino's quintet performs specifically the music from Montgomery's Riverside years, which was Martino's favorite period. I think I was the first person to hand Pat a copy of this album to sign. I pre-ordered it on Amazon and it came a day early, the day he played Scripps Athenaeum. this was his first visit to San Diego in 30 years. I was surprised by his reaction. He said, "it's finally done." This made me aware of the fact that even Pat has to work hard to play and put this music out and I have come to realize a lot of that work is dealing with the not so fun business side of the music he puts out. We tend to think people like Pat don't have to work for their gifts. This meeting was before Pat knew me well as a friend. He kept me there, talking to me while others waited and told us all about how he had a childhood affinity for this music but was drawn away from it by adult responsibilities. After his brain ailment people didn't make those demands on him anymore and he could return to that which brought him ecstasy as a child. He also talked about how as a child he had wanted to play this music, but it was only now that he had the chops to do it. "If I Should Lose You" is a song composed by Ralph Rainger with lyrics by Leo Robin. It was introduced in the forgotten 1936 film Rose of the Rancho. Notable recordings of the lyrical standard include Charlie Parker's 1950 date with strings, Grant Green's Born to be Blue from late 1961/early 1962 and Wes Montgomery's rendition from the Grooveyard album recorded in 1961. Martino has often cited the Grooveyard record as a major influence on his playing.
