Composed by Dinicu. Arranged by Ervin Monroe. Little Piper #FP-D6. Published by Little Piper (LI.FP-D6).Grigoras Dinicu (1889-1949) was a composer-violinist whose music entered around ethnic and gypsy themes. This piece, Hora Staccato, is one of his most popular works and was originally written of course for the violin. Over the years I have arranged a number of solo flute pieces for two flutes. On one occasion when James Galway was visiting us in Detroit I mentioned that I wanted to arrange a piece for him and his wife Jeanne. During his stay we began discussing the importance of the choice of keys when playing popular tunes and melodies on the flute. Hora Staccato was one piece included in our conversation. We both agreed that the key of F was more flute-like than the key of Eb, which is commonly used for flute arrangements of this tine. I finally got around to setting this work for two flutes, but I found in doing so that wild gypsy music does not lend itself to logical harmonic settings. The best bet in making this piece successful at concert time is to play fast and flashy! Discord and bending tones always seem to sound good as long as one makes it back to the final cadence on time and in tune.
